Geographical Codes created after 11/8/95 must be 4 alpha characters.

Geographical Codes created prior to 11/8/95 were two to four alpha characters.  Two or 3 character codes were left justified and the unused (rightmost) positions were blank filled.  It is for the latter reason that use of the "space" text symbol is permitted and, as a result, the element mode must be shown as "AN".

The actual numeric character values of 0 through 9 are not, nor have they ever been allowed within the Geographical Code.
Required as specified in BR 795-100-100.
