See BR 795-401-1XX for complete list.

Element Rules:

Geographical Codes created after 11/8/95 must be 5 alpha characters.

Geographical Codes created prior to 11/8/95 were two to four alpha characters.  Two or 3 character codes were left justified and the unused (right most) positions were blank filled.  It is for the latter reason that use of the "space" text symbol is permitted and, as a result, the element mode must be shown as "AN".

The Actual numeric character values of 0 through 9 are not, nor have they ever been, allowed within the Geographical Code.
